The Business of Being Born

I have to see this film. Okay, so when I heard that Ricki lake was the executive producer, I was more then a little skeptical. I mean, seriously... Come on! When I think Ricki Lake, I think "Tranvestite Beauty Pageant" or " I used to be fat, but now I'm all that!" I don't think "serious documentary film maker on issues regarding birth choice."

Then I saw this trailer. (for those of you who are technologically challenged, click here)

I'm still crying.

  7. Ricki is actually very underrated because of that talk show..and don't forget she has worked with some of the most talented people in hollywood and been their friend for at least 25 years...so I'll definitely give Ricki a shot ! Peace !

  9. Never heard of this, thanks for highlighting it. I know I had a c-section for pre-eclampsia and I feel with the 2nd they didn't want to take any chances with me. I asked the doc why so many more women today were having c-sections, could I not just wait a few more days (12 days over and the hospital policy was 10), he said years ago they waited for women to give birth naturally and they had a higher mortality rate. Today that rate (according to him) had decreased due to c-sections.

Interesting this trailer seems to dispute that. It did seem like a more convenient option(for the hospital and legally as I pointed for my 2nd birth) but with my first son I would have died if it wasn't for a c-section. So not all cases are for convenience. I will definitely be checking out this movie!

  11. It's such an interesting issue. On the one hand, for women like Irish Mammy and my sister, c-sections save lives, but I do think that the number of unecessary interventions has skyrocketed.

  12. You know she's talking at the home birth convention this year?

  13. I have seen this movie several times and although I liked it, it seemed unfinished to me somehow.

Ricki being a doula herself surprised me by not expanding on that role in the movie.

I much preferred "Pregnant in America" over BOBB
